Vesper Sparrow
Before we started today's route near Franklin, MN, I mentioned to Carl that he would have a terrific chance to really learn the song of the Vesper Sparrow. When the route was completed, he agreed that this survey provided a great opportunity to hear their sweet song that reminds one of a Song Sparrow and from whose song many birders have much difficulty distinguishing between.
The route's total ended with 52 individuals, and for those few stops where none were tallied, another stop would have 2 or 3 singing vespers. The species has shown an alarming decline since 1966 when the BBS started in both MN (-3.1%) and WI (-4.4%). Let's hope that this can be reversed over the next 3 decades.
